1.4th January: World Braille Day.

  • World Braille Day is annually celebrated on January 4, the birthday of Braille script or code inventor, Louis Braille.

2.The National Mission for Clean Ganga(NMCG) approves five Namami Gange projects in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand worth Rs 295.01 Cr. namami-ganga.png

  • Out of these 5 projects, three pertain to sewage management in West Bengal, one relates to sewage management in Uttarakhand and remaining one is related to ghat improvement works in Uttar Pradesh. Projects related to sewage management are located in high pollution load towns along river Ganga.

3.Union cabinet approved the establishment of new AIIMS in Bilaspur(Himachal Pradesh) under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

  • The cost of the project is Rs.1351 crore.

4.UN Security Council welcomes 6 New Non-permanent Members (Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast, Kuwait, Peru, Poland and the Netherlands).

  • The U.N. Security Council has 15 members including five of which (China, France, Russia, Britain and United States) are permanent ones.
  • The six countries who left the UN Security Council recently on December 31st are Egypt, Italy, Japan, Senegal, Ukraine and Uruguay.

5.Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs(IICA), India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) sign MOU for the training of employees of the latter in the area of payment banking.

6.Union Cabinet has approved the signing of MOU between India and Israel on cooperation in the oil and gas sector.5a514e251d00003e005c2982.jpg

  •  The Cooperation will facilitate promotion of investments in each other’s countries, technology transfer, R&D, conducting joint studies etc.

  • The External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will inaugurate the Regional Pravasi Bharatiya Divas of ASEAN countries in Singapore on January 7th. The theme of the event is “Ancient Route, new Journey: Diaspora in the Dynamic ASEAN- India partnership”.

8.Union Cabinet approves Indo-Myanmar agreement on the land border crossing.

  • The Agreement facilitates movement of people on the basis of valid passports and visas which will enhance economic and social interaction between the people of two countries.
  • Static Part: 1.India shares 1,643-km long border with Myanmar. It passes through four northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram.

9.The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs(CCEA) approves construction of bi-directional Zojila Tunnel worth Rs.6,809 cr in Jammu and Kashmir.

  • Zojila pass is at an altitude of 11,578 feet on Srinagar-Kargil-Leh national highway.
