1.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrives in New Delhi on a six-day visit to India. He was received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

  • Mr. Modi and Mr. Netanyahu visited Teen Murti Chowk for a solemn ceremony at the Teen Murti Memorial and paid homage to Indian soldiers who sacrifice their life to liberate Haifa in 1918.
  • The ceremony marked the formal renaming of Teen Murti Chowk as the Teen Murti Haifa Chowk. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj calls on Mr. Netanyahu discusses various aspects of bilateral ties aimed at strengthening strategic partnership.

2.The festival of harvest, Lohri is being celebrated today in North India especially in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi.

  • Prime minister Narender Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind have greeted the people on the occasion.
  • Mr. Kovind also greeted people on the occasion of Makar Sankranti and Pongal, which will be celebrated tomorrow.

3.The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today slashed ISD international incoming call termination rate to 30 paise from 53 paise. The new rate will be effective from 1st of next month.

  • In a statement, TRAI said it has reduced the termination charges payable by an International Long Distance Operator to the access provider. The telecom firms levy termination charge on operators from whose networks calls have been made, for transmitting them to the subscriber.

4.WorldEconomicForum (WEF) ranks India at 30th position on the global manufacturing index below China’s 5th place but above other BRICS peers, Brazil is ranked 41st, Russia 35th, and South Africa at the 45th place.

  • Japan topped the index and found to have the best structure of production in the Geneva-based WEF’s first ‘Readiness for the future of production report’ and is followed by South Korea, Germany, Switzerland, China, Czech Republic, the US, Sweden, Austria and Ireland in the top 10.
  • The report, which analyses the development of modern industrial strategies and urges collaborative action, has categorized 100 countries into four groups.India has been placed in the ‘Legacy’ group along with Hungary, Mexico, Philippines, Russia, Thailand, and Turkey, among others. China figures among ‘leading countries’, while Brazil and South Africa are in ‘nascent’ ones.

5.Union Minister for Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad to reach Colombo on a 3-day visit to Sri Lanka, to call on President MaithripalaSena and PM Ranil Wickremesinghe during his visit.

  • India and Sri Lanka are in discussion for Economic and Technical cooperation agreement (ETCA) and cooperation in IT sector is one of the main pillars of the proposed agreement.
  • MR. Prasad will also deliver a memorial lecture in remembrance of Sri Lanka’s former foreign minister Laxman Kadirgamar. The lecture will focus on various aspects of India – Sri Lanka relations.

6.Football Delhi signed a MoU with ASSOCHAM (The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry) for the development of the sport in the capital city.

  • As per the MoU, ASSOCHAM and Football Delhi will jointly form a task force to periodically review the progress made and take necessary steps.
  • ASSOCHAM’s secretary general D S Rawat said, “It is ASSOCHAM’s endeavor to promote sports and healthy lifestyle particularly amongst the youth.”

7.Angelique Kerber wins Sydney International championship tennis tournament.

  • Kerber won her first title since 2016 U.S. Open and extended her winning streak to nine matches with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Ashleigh Barty in the Sydney International final.

8.Senior sports administrator Anil Khanna to head Indian Olympic Association(IOA) Finance Commission.
