1. Australian Open: Swiss Star Roger Federer retains Men’s Singles title.

  • World number two Swiss tennis player Roger Federer has retained his Men’s Singles title in the Australian Open.The Defending champion defeated sixth seed Marin Cilic of Croatia.
  • It is Federer’s sixth Australian Open singles title and 20th Grand Slam title.
  • Federer becomes only the fourth player after Margaret Court, Serena Williams and Steffi Graf to win 20 or more major singles titles.

2. Freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai to be remembered on his 152nd birth anniversary on January 28th.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Lala Lajpat Rai and said, Lajpat Rai, left an indelible mark on India’s history. We remember him as a righteous and courageous leader who dedicated himself towards India’s freedom.

3. President Ram Nath Kovind launches National Immunization programme for 17 crore children below five years, on National Immunisation Day.

  • President Ram Nath Kovind launched the countrywide pulse polio programme for the year on January 28th by administering polio drops to a child at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • The programme will cover around 17 crore children to maintain the country’s polio-free status.

4. Ace Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna and his Hungarian partner Timea Babos have lost the Australian Open mixed doubles to Croat-Canadian pair Mate Pavic and Gabriela Dabrowski in Melbourne.

  • The fifth-seeded Bopanna and Babos lost in a closely fought match to eighth-seeded Croat-Canadian pair(Croatia’s Mate Pavic and Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski), which lasted one hour and eight minutes.

  • Saina, who is coming back from an ankle injury, failed to lift the veil of deception put by Tai Tzu and went down two straight games, in a completely lop-sided final.
  • Tai Tzu-Ying is a badminton player from Taiwan.

6. India-Japan Smart Grid Pilot Project was inaugurated Panipat, Haryana to solve the various complications faced by the power distribution sector.

  • It was inaugurated by State Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in the presence of Japanese Minister Keniko Sen.
  • India-Japan Smart Grid Pilot Project was initiated under intensive relations between Japan and India and Central Government’s flagship Make in India Programme.The project aims to make electricity distribution network smarter and disseminate Japanese technologies in India.

7. Film on the life of Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi wins US Documentary Grand Jury Award at Sundance Film Festival.

  • The documentary, titled “Kailash” and directed by debutante Derek Doneen, traces Satyarthis journey and his efforts to eliminate child trafficking and child labor.
  • The film has been produced by Davis Guggenheim and Sarah Anthony and co-produced by Purnima Raghunath.

8. The second-seeded Indo-American pair Leander Paes with partner James Cerretani wins 25th ATP Challenger doubles title after beating American-Filipino pair Denis Kudla and Treat Huey in the final of the Newport Beach event.

  • Paes, world No 61, has won crucial 125 points with this win as he is striving to move up the rankings ladder. He had logged 90 points at the Australian Open, where he made the third round with compatriot Purav Raja.
